St John the Evangelist Anglican Church
Montreux, Switzerland
Here to share the good news of Jesus Christ by word and deed.
The recorded History of St John's Church, Montreux goes back to the 1860's, but the English have associations with the region from ancient times, when travellers from Great Britain passed through Montreux on their way to Rome via the Grand St. Bernard Pass.
From 1860 to 1875, English residents in Montreux held services in hotels until a local hotelier donated land for
the construction
of an Anglican Church to serve the needs of the growing English-speaking community.
Work began in 1875, and the Church of St. John
the Evangelist was dedicated in 1877. In 1889 a Church Institute was buiIt adjacent to the Church, to house the EngIish Library. In
1954 the library was moved to allow the building to be converted into the present Chaplain's House.
Major restoration began in 1995 when the Church was given a new roof. The project is ongoing and includes
restoration of the triumphal
arch to its Belle Epoque decor, and renovation of the organ. For more information
on the restoration please see the appropriate
page.
